Wahl/Eversharp

A short history of Wahl/Eversharp brand:

Eversharp pens and pencils originated with Charles Rood Keeran, who founded the company in 1913 after applying for a patent on the first practical mechanical pencil, granted in 1915. The first Eversharp pencils were produced in New Jersey by the Heath Corporation and test-marketed in New York City in late 1913. Keeran established Keeran & Co. in 1914 in Chicago to sell these pencils. In 1915, Keeran signed a contract with the Wahl Adding Machine Company of Chicago to manufacture Eversharp pencils. Wahl took control of Eversharp by the end of 1916, absorbing the company while retaining Keeran in a sales role until he was pushed out in 1917. The Eversharp pencil was a great commercial success, selling over 12 million pencils by 1921. Wahl expanded into fountain pens by acquiring the Boston Fountain Pen Company in 1917, initially branding its pens Wahl and its pencils Eversharp. By the late 1920s, the company renamed itself Wahl-Eversharp, marketing both pens and pencils under this name. The company was renamed simply Eversharp in 1941. Eversharp remained a major pen and pencil manufacturer through the 1940s but struggled in the ballpoint pen market. In 1957, Parker Pen Company acquired Eversharp, briefly continuing the brand before ceasing production. The Eversharp name was still used for refills and accessories until 1999. In summary: - Founded by Charles Rood Keeran in 1913-1914, starting with mechanical pencils. - Production initially by Heath Corporation; later manufactured by Wahl Adding Machine Company. - Wahl acquired Eversharp fully by 1916, expanding into fountain pens after acquiring Boston Fountain Pen Co. - Renamed Wahl-Eversharp in late 1920s, then Eversharp in 1941. - Major market player until 1957, when acquired by Parker Pen Company. - Production of Eversharp pens and pencils ceased after acquisition; brand lingered on in refills until late 1990s. Eversharp is historically important for pioneering practical mechanical pencils and establishing a significant presence in fountain pen manufacturing in the early to mid-20th century.
