Waterman

A short history of Waterman brand:

Waterman Pens originated in 1884 when Lewis Edson Waterman invented a reliable fountain pen feed system called the "three fissure feed" that prevented ink leaks, securing a patent that year. Waterman started the "Ideal Pen Company" (later LE Waterman) and produced hard rubber pens with 14k gold nibs. By 1900, Waterman received a gold medal at the Paris Exposition for its innovations such as the "spoon feed" system, which prevented ink overflow. In 1904, Waterman introduced the pen clip, enabling pens to be carried in pockets, and in 1908 launched the first ink-overflow-proof retractable "Safety Pen." The company’s growth was boosted under Waterman’s nephew Frank D. Waterman, expanding worldwide and producing about 350,000 pens annually by the early 1900s. Waterman branched into new filling systems, including lever fillers used for 30 years starting in 1913. In 1926, manufacturing began in France under Jules-Isidore Fagard, creating Waterman-JiF (later Waterman S.A.). The company introduced the glass ink cartridge in 1927 and later the plastic cartridge in 1953. Waterman struggled with competition and changing markets and ceased US operations by the mid-1950s. Ownership changed hands multiple times: acquired by Bic in 1958 (which used Waterman for ballpoint pen market entry), then Gillette in 1987, and finally Sanford (Newell Rubbermaid/Newell Brands) in 2000. The brand now focuses on luxury writing instruments, maintaining its reputation for quality and innovation over 140 years.
