Montegrappa

A short history of Montegrappa brand:
Montegrappa fountain pens were founded in 1912 in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, originally under the name "Manifattura pennini d’oro e penne stilografiche" (Manufacturer of gold nibs and fountain pens), often referred to as Elmo in its early years. The company was established by Edwige Hoffman and Heinrich Helm. Initially, Montegrappa produced only pen nibs, and its own pen production began in the early 1920s. Their early pens included hard rubber models with eyedropper or safety filling systems, with designs inspired both by German and American pens of the time.
The distinctive octagonal silhouette seen on many Montegrappa pens was inspired by the bell tower of the Casa Erizzo church and was present in models from 1915. The company was among the first in Italy to use materials like ebonite and galalith, later embracing colorful celluloid in the 1920s and 1930s, helping to define their luxury pen aesthetics.
Montegrappa became one of Italy’s oldest and most respected fountain pen manufacturers, known for combining Italian style and craftsmanship. The brand grew through the 1930s, introducing faceted models and piston filling mechanisms. Through the years, Montegrappa saw ownership changes, including being acquired by the Richemont group in 2000, then reacquired by the Aquila family in 2009, who continue its legacy.
Notably, Montegrappa pens have been favored by famous literary figures like Ernest Hemingway and John Dos Passos during World War I, whose correspondence was carried out using Montegrappa’s pens at that time.
Today, Montegrappa is recognized for its finely crafted, often artistic luxury pens, employing precious materials and elaborate designs. It remains a prominent symbol of Italian pen manufacture with a long heritage.
