Sheaffer

A short history of Sheaffer brand:
The Sheaffer Pen Company was founded by Walter A. Sheaffer in Fort Madison, Iowa, and incorporated in 1913 to commercialize his invention of a lever-filling fountain pen. Walter Sheaffer patented this new filling mechanism in 1908, which allowed the pen’s ink sac to be filled easily by lifting a lever that depressed the sac, providing a more reliable and convenient filling system than older designs. The company started in the back room of Sheaffer’s jewelry store with just seven employees and quickly grew, producing 100,000 pens annually by 1917.
Sheaffer pens became highly regarded for their quality and innovation. A notable early product was the 1920 "Lifetime" pen, sold with a lifetime guarantee and featuring a relatively high price tag, emphasizing quality and durability. In 1924, Sheaffer introduced the iconic "White Dot" on the pen cap, which signified a lifetime warranty and became a lasting symbol of the brand’s quality craftsmanship, though the warranty aspect was dropped in later decades.
Over the years, Sheaffer continued to innovate with new filling mechanisms, including the sac-less plunger design in the 1930s and the "Touchdown" pneumatic filler introduced in 1949, followed by the "Snorkel" system which added a small extensible tube under the nib to fill without submerging it in ink. One famous model was the "Pen For Men" (PFM) introduced in 1959 with an inlaid nib design that remains a hallmark of Sheaffer’s higher-end pens.
The brand has changed ownership over time: it was sold by Bic to the A.T. Cross Company in 2014 and was acquired in 2022 by William Penn Private Limited, a luxury writing instruments retailer, marking a new phase in the company’s history.
In summary, Sheaffer pens have a rich history dating back to the early 20th century, founded on Walter Sheaffer’s pioneering lever-filling patent. The company is renowned for its quality, craftsmanship, and innovations in fountain pen design and filling mechanisms, as well as the enduring symbol of the White Dot denoting excellence.
